ABOUT
The Friends of the Gisborne Botanic Gardens are a not-for-profit incorporated association of volunteers. The association was formed in 1994 to raise awareness of the Gisborne Botanic Gardens, provide financial support for their development and interface with partners and collaborators including the Macedon Ranges Shire Council.
In 2019 we adopted the Model Rules for an Incorporated Association provided by the Consumer Affairs Victoria, Associations Incorporation Reform Regulations 2012, with minor modifications to recognise the name of our association, its purpose and the financial year under which we operate (1 May to 31 April).

FBGB Logo
The FGBG logo acknowledges three elements of place: the traditional country of the Wurundjeri Woi wurung, Macedon Ranges flora and the landscape form of our mountain range. It depicts the Wedgetailed Eagle (Bunjil) – often seen soaring across the skies of the Ranges, the Manna Gum (Wurun) – our chief eucalypt species, and the Golden Wattle – the floral emblem of Australia and endemic to the Macedon Ranges.
Membership
The membership of the Friends of Gisborne Botanic Gardens have a common and genuine interest in the ongoing improvement of the Gisborne Botanic Gardens for the benefit of the community. As well as providing financial support to the association through subscriptions, some members take part in working bees, social and science activities, promotion and fundraising events and representative or leadership roles on development projects. Our members have many and varied backgrounds and no prior horticultural knowledge or experience is needed to join.
Membership subscriptions are due 1 May each year.

Gardens
The Gisborne Botanic Gardens were established in 1991 in the centre of Gisborne in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges. The Traditional Owners of the land on which the Gardens are sited are the Wurundjeri Woi wurrung people.

The initial planting in the Gardens followed a New Zealand theme in recognition of the then sister city relationship with Gisborne New Zealand, and includes many examples of Hebe and Pittosporum. Some Gondwanan examples, demonstrating the shared evolutionary heritage of the two countries have also been planted. The bulk of the greenery on site derives from remnant indigenous vegetation along Jackson’s Creek, including some very old Manna Gums (Eucalyptus viminalis or wurun). Development of the Gardens since establishment has focussed primarily on the planting of trees along two avenues (the ironwood and ANZAC) and supplemental indigenous plantings along the Creek and under the Manna Gums.
Access to the Gardens is via pedestrian bridges across the eastern and western arms of Jackson’s creek or the footpath from Station Road.
The gardens are open to the public all year and there are toilets and picnic facilities in the adjacent parklands.

1994 - 2nd Masterplan, David Abbott, EDGe Design, Environmental Design Group
1993 -1996 - New Zealand section completed
2015 - ‘Ironwood’ and ‘ANZAC’ Avenues scoped, planned and installed
2017 (Dec) - 3rd Masterplan adopted
Working bees
Working bees are held in the Gardens every first and third Tuesday of the month, 9:30 to 11:00am. Tools, safety equipment and refreshments are provided. Working bee activities include weeding, planting, mulching, weed removal and rubbish cleanup.
Events
The Friends of Gisborne Botanic Gardens host 3 annual promotion and outreach events in the Gardens: Botanic Gardens Day (May), Wattle Day (September), Garden Walk (November).
